A recent investigation estimates that the U.S. government owns $5 billion worth of confirmed Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), as a result of three recorded seizures.
According to data from cryptocurrency company 21.co, as published by Cointelegraph, the U.S. government's holdings of Bitcoin amount 194,188 BTC, or almost $5.3 billion. Since they are based on information that is available to the public, these numbers are regarded as conservative estimates.
These holdings can be traced to three large Bitcoin seizures that were announced after 2020: the 69,369 BTC Silk Road seizure in November 2020, the 94,643 BTC Bitfinex Hack seizure in January 2022, and the 51,326 BTC James Zhong seizure in March 2022. These three seizures resulted in a total gain of $5 billion.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Internal Revenue Service-managed hardware wallets, which are encrypted storage devices, are used by the government to safely hold these BTC assets offline.
The U.S. Marshals Service, the main organization in charge of liquidating confiscated assets, instead obtains ownership after a judge makes a final forfeiture order and transfers the tokens. This is significant because it shows that the government does not immediately take custody of the seized assets.
If the U.S. government decides to sell these assets, it could have a significant impact on cryptocurrency values as well as the larger market for digital assets.
Jarod Koopman, executive director of the IRS's cyber and forensics services division, has underlined that the timing of the government's asset liquidation is governed by their established protocols rather than by active market speculation.
, the government does not indulge in HODLing (keeping onto assets with no intention of selling them) or holding off on disposal until the token value has increased.
The government now aims to sell any confiscated assets through cryptocurrency exchanges as opposed to the customary auction method based on court-issued liquidation orders. A public filing from March 2023 revealed that the government had sold 9,118 BTC on Coinbase.
